I don’t know about you, but I’m getting pretty tired of hearing me whine. If I really want to be a painter and an artist, I just have to do it already. After much boring contemplation about my angst, my solution is simple...If you have a few minutes, I’d love to show you my paintings.

One assignment was to paint ourselves as we’d like to be seen by others. So I propped up my easel in front of a mirror and this is what happened. It’s the first human face I’ve ever painted in my life. It’s done in oils and framed in tiny fake flowers that I glued on. With the red lips and (imaginary) cleavage, you can see my wish to be viewed as a beautiful and sensuous woman.
I really enjoyed our unit on collages, too. For this assignment, we
had to show what our bodies look like. I have a lot of fabric and
craft materials around. So I wrapped a piece of cardboard in
black-and-white fabric. Everything to do with my body is pastels
worked on black construction paper. Then we’ve got bottoms,
sewing trimmings, fake flowers, buttons and glitter glue.
Obviously, hands mean a lot to me -- not just because I write and
paint and like to make stuff. I’ve also got my issues about being a
left-handed person forced into right-handedness. I love color too.
Phew! Well. That wasn’t so terrible. I managed to get through this
post without making any jokes about my myself or my work.
I’m gonna post more stuff soon.
It’s time for me to practice what I preach. When I have my students read their work out loud to the class, a lot of them start off by explaining why their pieces aren’t good enough. I always cut them off and tell them they need to own their work. So now, without further blah-blah, I give you my self-portrait.
I made it two springs ago, during my first-ever painting class with Prof. Anthony Viti at Parsons School of Design. Parsons is part of The New School and since I teach there, I was able to audit
Anthony’s class for free. It was a glorious experience.
